Survey on the Future of a Province-Wide Student Information System
BCeSIS is a province-wide student information system used by schools and school districts across the province. Users access the system over the internet, using it to track information about each student, ranging from their name and birth date to programs and courses completed and services received.
The Ministry is assessing future directions for BCeSIS. Gartner Consulting was hired in spring 2011 to review BCeSIS and recommend next steps. Gartner’s report recommends that the Province purchase a new student information system, continuing to use BCeSIS until it can be implemented. You may wish to read Gartner’s full report, its executive summary or a summary of Gartner Report findings prepared by the Ministry of Education.
In December 2011 partner organizations and other stakeholder groups were invited to participate in an engagement process to:
- Provide feedback on the findings and recommendations of the Gartner report;
- Assess the level of support for a new common student information system; and
- Gather input on high-level business and functional requirements and features to support school operations and personalized learning.
Through an online survey, feedback was received from school districts, independent school associations, the Yukon and a consortium of BCeSIS users. Interviews were conducted with stakeholder groups, including FNESC, FISA, BCCPAC, BCTF and the BCSTA. In addition input was received from individual teachers, staff, parents and students through surveys posted on the Ministry’s Education Plan website. Information from these reports is being used to prepare for the procurement of a new common student information system.
